This week, I watched one of the recommended Skillshare tutorials, "Think Like a Designer: Making an Art Poster" by Chip Kidd. I have learned about his work before in previous classes and his work done for Penguin Randomhouse and book publishing. In this talk, he walks us through creating an art poster, a poster that is image-driven and more about ideas and events. He talks about how this course is great for someone who wants to dive a little deeper into conceptual thinking in creating a poster. I thought this was perfect for me right now as I start fleshing out my AIGA Get Out the Vote poster. I want to be very captivating and conceptual in getting an idea and message to the viewer, and I thought this would help me as I begin working towards that. He talks about how when he designs a poster by honing in on a few key ideas, like the idea of who the author is as a person and the ideas they are trying to get across, as well as other key items like where this design going to go and what does it reference. He also talks about how, for a poster or a book, as he is used to designing, he asks himself what can I do to make someone look at the poster? What can I do to intrigue the viewer? In the video, he comes up with his ideas and vocalizes that process it was super interesting to see how quickly and creatively his mind just jumped from one reference to the next to land on a powerful design. I think that this talk will help me as I try to find a way to create something really compelling and captivating that shows my strong emotions in my vote poster and how I can convey that.
