This week, I chose to watch the Skillshare tutorial on "Typographic Poster Design: From Sketch to Vector" by Martin Perhiniak. In the tutorial, Martin guides viewers from the initial search for creative inspiration to the meticulous sketching phase. One key takeaway was Martin's unique approach of starting his sketches directly in Illustrator against a grey background, a method that not only aids in drawing but also prevents the overwhelming blank canvas effect of a stark white background. As Martin emphasized the importance of using a tablet for drawing directly in Illustrator, I found parallels with my own workflow using Procreate on my iPad. Despite the convenience, I realized the limitation of Procreate sketches not being vectors, potentially posing challenges when trying to scale up or down my drawings. The additional step of vectorizing sketches in Illustrator can be time-consuming but crucial for maintaining design integrity. The tutorial goes further into essential tips and tricks for using the pen tool, a tool that had been a source of struggle for me last year, especially. Martin's insights help to increase both the speed and quality of using the pen tool and using shortcuts and more, which all help speed up the design process and make workflow easier. Martin Perhiniak's tutorial offered a lot of practical advice that I can incorporate into how I work. By implementing these newfound tips and tricks, I am excited to grow my design skills and hopefully create compelling poster designs. As I finish up any final adjustments on my AIGA Get Out the Vote poster this weekend and create a social media post to go alongside it, I will be keeping some of these tips in mind as I go through the process and finish my designs.
